hardware trouble

sir/madam,
ever since i connected my friends harddisk to my pc,it does not boot instead it shows a cursor blinking on the screen. i got it repaired but afterwards when i connected my dvd writer to the mother board,alas,the same condition took over.i dont know what is wrong.is the hard disk faulty....... i m using xp service pack 2.

try checkin ur jumper settings

First make sure ur HDD got detected in BIOS. If its Primary master, set first boot device to HDD0 or simply Hard Disk[depends on bios make].
