Files and Folder Jacked Up

Today in the morning all I did was just selected the option in Folder Options to "Show Hidden Files". After I clicked on "Apply" and then on "OK" but when I closed it, things like "Show Common tasks in Folders" was deactivated all by itself while the option was active in "Folder Options". All of my icons are now being shown as the window's unknown file type ones. Even if I right click in folders like "My Pictures", "Arrange Icons By" has been Greyed out like the ones which we can't change . **** IS TOTALLY ****ED UP. HELP MEEE PLEEAASSEE!!!!

Boot Time Scanned with Avast, and restarted the system in the evening and everything is back to normal except that the time taken to start up that is loading personal settings etc took a bit more time than usual. Will keep u posted but would really appreciate it if someone shed the light on the fact that what the hell did happen anyway?
