I have a 2.5 TB USB 2 External HD and I am gonna buy a laptop which supports USB 3. Is it possible to convert my external HD into a USB 3 one, so that I can transfer files at a higher speed?

usb is just a medium to transfer data.all one need is a connector to output whatever through drive native output(in this case usually SATA)into usb port.there are usb 3.0 casing available for hard disks just like usb 2.0 casings only costlier.
Buy RAIDON SafeTANK Series J1-1S-B3 in Mumbai India

Back to school!!
You don't need to convert anything, USB 3.0 is forward and backward compatible.

you have to open the case which will void your warranty & take the drive out & put it inside a new usb 3 casing(links i posted earlier).in my opinion it is not worth the hassle & risk especially now when hard disk prices are so high if something goes wrong & warranty is void you will have to spend a lot to buy new hard disk.
