DVD to AVI

I have bought a few DVD's and i want to make up backup copies of them . First of all is it legal for me to make backup copies of my DVD's ?
I would like to convert these DVD's to Divx (avi) files . Any software that cn help me in this . Mostly looking out for a freeware !!
