Its reverse, as all software which works on WInXP Pro will work with WinXP MCE, how ever, some multi media application which are bundled with Windows XP MCE will need special hardware like compatible TV Tuner card to run them...

is that like vista's basic and ultimate version ?

No... they (WinXP versions) dont have any huge visible diffrece, which ever they have is at back end, in normal running condition u wont feel it :p

Refer here, *www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/evaluation/compare.mspx

Well they are almost same but some Advance Networking feture like Domain Controlling and other active server / directory features will be missing in MCE compare to XP Pro, all so, MCE is considered a consumer product rather than a business one, so possible that support (Update patches) for this edition may end lot sooner than XP Pro....

Here is my verdict. I personally use MCE 2005. And folks know that MCE is diff from MCE 2005. MCE had only SP1 integrated and it released in the year 2003 i guess. and MCE 2005.. The name explains it.
MCE 2005 is no lower version of XP professional. MCE 2005 comes with SP2 and also media enhancement applications like audio converter, disc label creator, windows party mode and a windows dancer.
Also it has a nice blue theme.
I dont see any problems with this version at all.

yeah you're right I just checked the prices and Home is cheaper (mind you they were a lot different b4 vista was ever out). Pro was in essence the first XP released. then some 'genius' decided that they need to make a lite version to throw on PC's that would be bought (so they would have some sort of OS) so they took Pro and started 'erasing' certain code... now I don't get paid to program, but I don't think it is wise to take a program that seems to work fine, then erase coding in it. MCE is Pro with an add-on. so in essence there should be no diff between pro and MCE except the obvious media portion.
clmlbx look for a screen shot of any windows XP and I am sure the version will say 2002, unless it has no sp.

Attitude matters
Yes. Windows Media Center edition 2005 is nothing but Windows XP professional SP2 with Media center Application integrated into it. And it is a lot cheaper than Windows XP Professional.Windows MCE however does not allow networking. You can still incorporate this networking facility (joining a domain as they call it ) by integrating the network drivers for your card by using nlite and using the nlited MCE 2005 for installation of the OS. Even otherwise you can make registry modifications later for networking. One can search the various MCE forums and get the details of the necessary modifications.
If one wants to use the PC as a media center, then a MCE compatible TV tuner is necessary. Also an MCE compatible Video decoder is necessary. If you install Cyberlink Power DVD, it installs the video decoder too which is MCE compatible. With MCE compatible TV tuner you get the PVR function automatically. If you use other TV tuners, you have to install the necessary XP tuner Driver and PVR application that came with the tuner and operate it under Windows XP.(it will not be integrated with MC application)
Windows Vista Home premium comes with MC integrated and MS' own video decoder. The TV tuner requirements will be the same as MCE 2005 in that they have to use MS certified WDM tuner driver.
