yes..intel 915 do support vista.I also have intel 915 original motherboard..and I had installed vista RC1 on it.

But u wont get aero theme on onboard graphics.u need to add a decent graphics card to have aero theme .

You gave been GXified
Your current motherboard is fine. Just get a XFX or any such 7300GT graphics card with 128 or 256 MB RAM, depending on your budget as the minimum, or a 2nd hand Geforce 6600 or better Gfx card.

In ATI camp, don't look for anything lower then a X1600

i was waiting for a mid range dx10 like 8600 series ...
But wont the pcie4x be a big bottleneck ?
also, this mobo has realtek ac97 audio and mufacturer (asrock) predicts that onboard sound may not be enough for vista .. .
anyways , whats the price of those intel mobo's (d915...)?
and what will be price of the psu i will need to buy . I have a budget of around 10k . so i want to choose a card that can suit my budget..
If i can get a much better performance coz intel has pcie16x , i think i will opt for a mobo change..

@ravi
does ur vista support audio ? any probs coz asrock said that only 2 speakers will be supported for the sound that i have . . .

thanks guys....
__________
and budget is 3k for the mobo alone......

Ur best bet now is to go in 4 a new mobo cuz ur PCI-e x4 will be a bottleneck.
for 3k go in 4 any Intel 945/Nvidia chipset mobos by Asus (Vista drivers alredy available on web ) or MSI.These new mobos hav hi-def audio on board which work flawlesly with Vista.
If u hav a good 400w PSU den u wont need a new one, else buy a VIP for bout 1.5-1.7k.

that gives me just abt 5k for the graphics card !! i think i might get at a lower price coz i'm getting it from soudhi , my dad friends a manager(or somethhing like that) in a firm or company that distributes various comp parts , yes even graphics cards.

does 915 support vista ? is it ok ?how much wud that cost ?

how much is 945 ( specific names and prices ) ?
I have a p4 3.0Ghz HT proccy , 1024mb DDR333 80GB SATA and a dvd ram drive .
thanks a lot..

Since u hav DDR ram den u wont be able to buy 945 chipset mobos cuz they support DDR2.dont go 4 915 mobos cuz dat chipset is very old.Go 4 nvidia chipset mobos from ASUS.

afaik intel is only cutting prices of its processors.
natively 915 chipset will support Vista but without the touted Aero UI.but a nvidia chipset mobo having 6100/6150 onboard gfx will support Vista along with Aero.
as far as DX10 gfx card is concerned i dont think u'll get a sub 10k card before Q3 2007.
just buy the mobo now and save money and buy the gfx card when they r available within ur budget.

yes vista supported my 4.1 speaker. As far as my memory can remember .... my sound card was automatically installed by vista..and I was getting good sound quality..and all my 4.1 speaker were working fine.

ok then ,cud it run all games(speaking in terms of sound) well enough.
Then ive made my choice , i'll go 4 mob and card when the cards arrive . thanks a lot...any other nvidia chipset mobo prices less than 3k , i'll ask in may or june when i buy the card . so long as d915 supports sound in vista , i think i can buy that .
thanks a lot.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^hey mine advice is not to go for intel 915,insteaad go for intel945 or higher.Intel wont have vista support for 915 series. So if u planing for vista..choose 945 series or above.

It would be great mistake to buy 915 chip based motherboards now and a mistake for which you will repent later.

These boards are not good enough and may not support Core 2 Duo processors, in case you want to upgrade in future. As said by other learned members, btter go for 946 or 965 chip based motherbaords, they are vista compatible as well as supports core 2 Duo.

If you are hell bent upon buying 915, then instead go Intel D102 board which has ATI onboard graphics, enough to run your vista. But mind you, this board is good but not futuristic, i.e. it do not support Core 2 Duo.

May is still fay away and by then some other motherbaords from FoxConn & ATI will probably come to market. Good motherboards are from MSI, Asus & FoxConn etc.

buy guys if he buys a 945/946/965 he'll hav to buy new ram.so his best bet is to buy D101/nvidia chipset mobos which will support his present ram.

thanks.
i wont kill my self for the future . i am going change the system completely in 1 or 2 yrs . so all i want is a temporary solution . does it really matter whether the onboard graphics supports vista , i am going in for a dx10 card . All i want is onboard sound to support vista . even if i buy a mid end card , i think it will last for a year or two . Then again , i am not a hardcore gamer , just a casual one. I think , by the time i buy the new rig , core2duo will definitely outdated . and changing ram as assasin said will deplete my budget for the g-card tooooo much . As itself , my budget is damn low , so i think i should best go for a 915 ( or equivalent mobo ) that has pcie16x , supports ddr1 and p4 proccy and it should have onboard sound supported by vista .
since i aint chanigin any other component , why go for a costly one and cut down on the card . i have to buy a card that can run for atleast 18 months.
And true may is far . i think i made the mistake of thinking abt the mobo , i think i'll take ur advice and buy the mobo along with the g-card in may or jun...
thanks
