Guys if i want to buy 16gb RAm for sandy bridge can I buy it like:

1. 1 set of 4 sticks Corsair dominator(4X4GB)?

2. 2 sets of 2 sticks corsair dominator(2X4GB)?

is there any difference in the above two?

is any one of them ok? please help.

4x4gb is the best option. Go for the dominators. They have good overclocking headroom.

How Vicky?

More slots occupied will have burden on memory controller and needs high volts to Overclock... I say his best option would be 2 sticks than 4 sticks...

With my experience of 4 Sticks previously during q9550,, i had to feed immense of volts on NB to get stable with Quad Rams...)

Well he can't get to 16gb unless he does 4x4 right? That was the priority for op. So getting 4 sticks of 4gb ram seems a viable option assuming the mobo has atleast 4 dimm slots.

I have no idea on how more occupied slots will have burden on IMC but the above config. will help the OP reach 16gb marks easily.

Corsair has also launched its vengeance series of memory modules and it doesn't even come with a 2gb avatar & 4gb is bare minimum. Only a 3x2gb is available but thats a triple channel config for x58 platform. The rest are in 2x4, 3x4 & 4x4.

ok.. I missed his requirement which is important to suggest ... Sorry ;)

And also Yes, More RAM sticks will be burden to IMC and not helpful for OC.. Though for normal stock use it's not that deal..

Hey buddy no need to say sorry .:) Your opinion here shall prove very helpful for op and other members including me.

if you all looked at his 2 options correctly, they are same in the respect both have 4 modules.
1. 4 kits of 4gb single module in each.
2. 2 kits of 2*4gb dual modules in each.

this is what i have been able to infer.

@S_V
it is bad comparing core architecture with SNB. SNB mem controller is much more efficient.

@adityamgk
go for cheaper offering of the 2 or any you like. mention the specific models also please.

Hey you nailed it jas. Great piece of information. P67 supporting upto 32gb with high density modules is simply superb. But do home computers need that much amount of memory?

As far as i know only server hardware needs that much or even more cause the cpu has to fetch a lot of client requests from memory to process them. Maybe computing is getting complex as hardware evolve.

Well a OFF TOPIC question, I was thinking of buying a 2 GB Corsair XMS3 1600 MHz RAM, my question is 2 GB available, or will I have to buy 4 GB minimum? and Can I use any other RAM?, like - Dominator or else, as I already have 4 GB XMS3 installed.

You can get a single 2 GB XMS3 1600 MHz module @ 1.5-1.6K each

You got it wrong mate.. I am not comparing or talking about how each Dimm support max memory .. I am talking about, the more modules you use, it's burden for IMC as it is needed more volts to run the higher BUS speeds not the memory speed...

I hope you know that well...

Dominators are so over rated dude...you can get 16GB of Gskill tridents for half the price, they too are great overclockers btw..

@adi: you setting up some kind of a server ?

to run them in 1600Mhz i had to use 1.27 and for OC 1.3xx ... If i use tight Timings ,, i had to use very high volts to get stable..

To run just in 1066 or 1333MHZ very low volts can be used....

That's where Dominator GT's play key Role... Actually we tested lots lots of RAMS in higher bus speed with Dominator's and other Brands.... Of all, Dominator GT's and Mushkin RidgeBacks are very good and optimized for these kind of Setups... They hold very good when using 3 or more Modules with high Bus Speeds unlike their junior brothers.... Of all Tests Mushkin RidgeBacks beat Corsair in all TESTS..

Friend runs them at his Tridents @1600MHz CL7 at stock volts, very sure he can take those up too..

Dominator GTs will really prove their value if you are a hardcore overclocker going for gold. Aditya is definitely not gonna do that , so why not save some money? :)

Yes, anyone can run but majority don't know what exactly happening in BIOS each time when they do updates or increase their configuration...

Even if you don't change manually ,the BIOS detects auto when it is set to auto and it will increase the volts sufficient to that spec.. And how many does know or observe this change ? very few... and that's what i am talking about... in fact majority don't know at what BUS speed they are running and just conclude only RAM speed by looking at properties in My computer... They don't know what timings or volts it is running...
