Hi,
Want to use my desktop as a HTPC setup. It will be doing lots of other functions as well.
Details below.
Help needed.
Also please advise any change in configs or any suggestions under the sun.
1. What is the purpose of the computer? What all applications and games are you going to run? (Generic answers will not work. Be exact and avoid the word 'et cetera.')
Ans:
1. HTPC - Have a Full HD Samsung 40' LCD TV (1080p) with HDMI input. My mobo has HDMI output.
2. NAS storage for all my files and movies. (4 1TB hard drives in RAID 5 configuration).
3. Virtualization host (Will be hosting a Linux and a Windows virtual server - Those will be accessed remotely via RDP or VNC or SSH - Purely for programming and testing reasons)
4. A firewall and proxy (To effectively share and control my Internet connection)
5. A download box - torrents.
2. What is your overall budget? If you can extend a bit for a more balanced configuration, then mention this too.
Ans:
Need the following ;
1. 5.1 channel sound system.- 6k
2. Internal HD TV Tuner card with remote compatible with Ubuntu. - 5k
3. BluRay Drive. 6k
4. Cabinet - Good looking (will be in my drawing room) - airflow should be good. 3k
5. PCI Ethernet card (With multiple ports) - No idea - Want VFM solution
6. 4 1TB hard disks. - No idea - Want VFM solution
7. A good UPS.
8. 6 GB more of DDR2 matching RAM with my Corsair 2GB DDR2. (Total 8 GB)
My motherboard has 5.1 channel audio output. So want to utilise that.
Please do not suggest any graphics or sound card at this moment. I want to see my system performance with the current config and decide later.
I will be using a HD STB for TV. So please suggest a good and VFM HD TV tuner card compatible with Ubuntu.
3. Planning to overclock?
Ans: Maybe later
4. Which Operating System are you planning to use?
Ans: Ubuntu
5. How much hard drive space is needed?
Ans: 4TB in RAID 5 config.
6. Do you want to buy a monitor? If yes, please mention which screen size and resolution do you want. If you already have a monitor and want to reuse it, again mention the size and resolution of monitor you have.
Ans: No. Compaq 22' LCD monitor. No idea on resolution.
7. Which components you DON'T want to buy or which components you already have and plan on reusing?
Ans:
AMD Phenom II X2 550 BE
Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-US2H
Corsair 2GB DDR2
Coolermaster 460W Real Power Pro
WD 500GB SATA Green
Compaq 22' LCD monitor.
8. When are you planning to buy the system?
Ans: In 1 month
9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
Ans: I have built desktops lots of times.
10. Where do you live? Are you buying locally? Are you open to buying stuff from online shops if you don't get locally?
Ans: Currently in Australia. But will be in Bangalore in 3 weeks.
11. Anything else which you would like to say?
Ans: The fully built system will behave as follows :
1. Headless : Only TV will be connected. The server should automatically boot to a MythTV or XBMC frontend.
2. All server related tasks will be done remotely via SSH or RDP or VNC.
The Phenom CPU along with the motherboard dynamically clocks down the CPu during low usage to save power.
In otherwords it provides on demand power.
