configuring internet in ubuntu

could anyone tell me how to configure internet in ubuntu.

i access the net throught the lan in the college. have a proxy server and static ip address. added all the info during installation but still not able to access the internet.
also could someone help me out with setting up xmms in ubuntu? coz it doesnt install at all.

could somebody help me out.

In the zone
what i did was delete all network connections i.e. ethernet,.... whatever and then created new ones with the info i had.. and got connected...

If your box has access to use the gateway then you dont need to go through the proxy server. This is especially good since you do have a static ip address.
Just run network-admin tool and configure your eth0 to use appropriate gateway and nameserver.

thanks guys the internet is working now.
another problem is that i cant get the default media player totem to work with ANY file. it doesnt play even a dat file on vcds. any ideas on what to do?

also when i try to install ut2k3 it tells me to read n agree to the licence agreement but doesnt show any licence agreement and hence am not able to install it

help would be apreeciated
