Hi,

I'm using cable internet for the last 2 years but i was always worried if the cable connection provider or any other user may not have access to my drives. How can i ensure that my data is safe?

Regards, Rohit

:arrow: Install firewall ex. ZoneAlarm or Sygate (both have free versions to download too)

:arrow: Never .. *Never* .. keep any of your Windows account password empty, esp Administrator account

:arrow: Goto start->run-> gpedit.msc
here -> local computer policy -> conputer configuration -> windows settings -> security settings -> local policies -> security options
here you can play with many parameters..
i suggest u change these =>
accounts: rename administator account
accounts: rename guest account
Network access: sharing and security model for loca accounts - change to 'local users authenticate as themselves
etc ..
there are other things u can try changing in here

:arrow: ok as you put it i have zonealarm pro
:arrow: But about your second line?? why is that a password is so essential in this case ?? :cry:
:arrow: Also lastly isn't drive sharing off by default. Do i still have to do what you have mentinoned in the last lines ??

1 I purchased windows xp pro with sp2 & norton internet security 2005. So, i have a firewall & also isn't spybot a spy removal tool & not a firewall ?

2 Anyway, i always use an admininstration password.

3 And changed the settings to ' 'local users authenticate as themselves '

yeah alibi just made a teensy mistake :) tho his link is right
what he meant to say was SYGATE personal firewall
anyways i depend on zonealarm and kaspersky AV
norton is good enuff
in adition to this uae adaware / spybot SnD
and i also use BPS spyware remover ( bullet proof software )
it has this "IMMUNISATION"function to make sure those 150 rated threats never get in !
also has inbuild HiJack This so u can post ur log file whenever asked easily !
in addition u can use a TROJAN REMOVER !! complimentary to ur AV ofcourse

password is essential b'cos i know a lot guys in my college who can easily get into your computer if you dont have any password in admin account.
keeping password is like .. being on safer side, not taking risk.
and drive sharing .. yes .. if its already off then u dont need to do that :)

sorry my mistake ..
corrected it above too :lol: :lol: :lol:

I know there must be a lot of other things you can do to furthur ensure security ..
ex. go to start-> run -> services.msc
:arrow: disable 'remote registry'
:arrow: disable 'remote desktop connection'
my computer -> right click -> manage (ofcourse in assuming its winXP )
system tools -> local users and groups -> users
:arrow: disable those 'help assistant', 'support_xyz', etc accounts which you dont know, disable guest too if you want to

im sure there are lots of more suggestions possible ( other than downloading softwares from net )
