Hey friends!
I am going to buy a new PC and I am a bit confused.
This is my wish list of the features I want in my PC:
Motherboard:
Dual/Quad core compatible,
64-bit supported,
DDR-I/II/III compatible,
Onboard Graphics(Geforce chipset),
PCI-E,
Vista compatible
and
Powerful enough to sail me through my next 3-4 years of engineering.
(I have decided to focus on the motherboard particularly,so that there are no compatibility issues in the future if I wish to upgrade)
A decent cooling cabinet,
450W power supply,
2GB DDR 667MHz RAM,
1 50GB (for OS)and 1 250GB(others) SATA-HDD,
DVD RW,
19"TFT.....
My budget is not very high, its about 25000Rs.
Any suggestions?????????????

for 25000Rs you will get a decent performing pc.

1. all the cpu's dual core and core 2 duo and later models are all 64bit.
2. mother boards are not back ward compactable with RAMS that is a mobo supporting
ddr3 will not support ddr2. nor they are forward supporting.
3. do you need 2 HDD's or a single one?
this is my suggestion

AMD X2 4000+
Gigabyte mobo(get the one with 4 ram modules)(3-4K)
2*1 GB or 3*1 GB transcend @ 667(1800),(3600)
Asus 8600GT 256MB DDR3 (5-6K)
320 GB WD or seagate(4K)
liton dvd writer(1.2K)
samsung 19" monitor with 1000:1 ratio(10500+ tax) in bangalore.

the prices are very rough estimates. and are old. just to give you an idea thats it.

Intel P35 based Motherboards support both DDR2 and DDR3 RAM.
Best among them are Asus P5KC - *www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=534&l4=0&model=1694&modelmenu=1,
Gigabyte EP35C-DS3R

I own the Gigabyte Board ;)

does't it have splashdot ?

the only problem with it is that its onboard sucks.

really???? i did not know that?
but the ram modules are different right? i mean the tiny gap is not in the same place right?

thank you for correcting though.

very interesting.
so is it possible to have 4 DDR3 rams and 2 DDR2 rams say 1GB each that is 4+2GB.
do all have to have the same frequencies?

I think you can run only one of them at a time.
+1

and the reason for their existance is that in a few more years, if the mobo is still usable for the then current generation CPUs/GPUs, and when DDR3 will be cheap, you can save some cash by keeping the mobo and just adding some el-cheapo ram and CPU.

I think 945 chipset had the same feature for DDR vs DDR2, and it was successful.
