OK, I have decided to buy a domain for my blog. I guess several members in this forum have already bought it from Yahoo, so yahoo is one of my option.
What about godaddy? It's offering .com at $6.99 which is cheaper than yahoo. I don't have any idea what kind of features and controls does buying a domain give you. So please throw some light here.

How long does it take for the domain to become active after I buy it?

I have gone through the thread created by Kiran.

He has bought from yahoo. But there is one problem with his site. The dns lookup is too slow. It takes around 5 sec to find the site. Is this a problem with yahoo? Kiran are you reading?

I don't want to buy hosting right now. I will continue with my blogger account. Google says that all visitors to oldname.blogspot.com will be automatically redirected to mydomain.com. What about other pages like oldname.blogspot.com/2007/xyz.html? Will they be redirected too?

Anything else I need to know?

Blackpearl, It takes only few hours for the domain to get activated. In my case it happened in less than 6 hours. The time may go max upto 1 day. Once the domain is activated, I changed the DNS settings to the server client.

Domain registration is generally instant in many service provider, it is DNS propagation which take time.

An Godaddy Customer since 2005 I will definately say go with godaddy.

Activation should take an hour while the Name server resolution will take few more hours rather give in a day.

Within a day you will have your domain name live and kicking.

Wandering in time...
Yes registration is instant and with new domains the DNS propagation is rather fast as they are not in the cache of the ISPs already...its usually within 6 hours...
I too would say godaddy...though yahoo 2$ domains is rather attractive....

Ok. thanks. So DNS settings can be achieved as soon the domain is activated. So should I go with yahoo? what about others? does cheaper domain means bad service?

One more question: with yahoo is the price $9.95 or are there some hiden cost?

You are welcome.

I have changed my domain settings immediately on next day after I registered the .com name with Yahoo. It happened quick.

I suggest you to go for yahoo. I am not sure about the credability of gettings domain from cheap sources. Normally Yahoo domain registration charges $9.95. But I have registered for just $1.99. I have checked in yahoo now and found that that offer is still there for newcomers.

Here is my suggestion,

1. For first year, go for Yahoo...forget others....for 2$ ..nothing can beat it....Yahoo is actually losing money on first year of promotion.
2. When second year comes, they are equalizing costs and not even making profit at 10$....at that time, transfer to someone else...unless ICANN doesnt increase fees like it did this month
