the new desktop AMD dual-core CPU—the Athlon 64 X2. The dual-core Opteron was faster than any of Intel's desktop chips, and the X2 is faster than the Opteron, so does that make it the best desktop processor on the planet?

AMD Athlon 64 X2 CPU Reviews

Bit-Tech
"The problem here is when you feed the FX-55 with too much pie, it spits it back out at you, while the X2 4800+ appears to be hungry for more and more... Remember to be realistic, the Athlon 64 X2 is an expensive alternative to the Athlon 64 FX-55 and if you are sensible with your computing habits, you will not find the Athlon 64 FX-55 or 4000+, for that matter, being overstretched by your needs."

"OVER THE PAST FEW weeks, we've seen a parade of dual-core CPUs, starting with the Pentium Extreme Edition 840 and the dual-core Opterons. Now it's time for AMD's dual-core desktop processor line, the Athlon 64 X2, to take its turn on stage. Sporting a fashionable 939 pins on its underbelly, this CPU promises to drop into the average Athlon 64 desktop system and transform it, almost magically, into a dually. The X2 offers an infusion of creamy multitasking smoothness and nearly twice the peak processing power of an Athlon 64 FX-55.
We've had two versions of this CPU on the bench in Damage Labs for a while now: the screaming 4800+ that may be the fastest single microprocessor on the planet, and the gotta-have-it 4200+, AMD's most affordable dual-core processor that promises to be every enthusiast's new sweetheart. Can AMD's dual-core desktop processors deliver on their promise? Keep reading."

"On the 25th of April AMD announced loads of dual core stuff. Besides the launch of the dual core 8xx series Opteron it also announced the 2xx dual core Opteron and the dual core Athlon 64 X2. Today we’re a step closer to the launch of Athlon 64 X2 but it’s not here quite yet - you’ll have to wait until June for that pleasure. If only there was a large international IT trade show that started at the end of May why, that would be the perfect venue to announce a new processor.
Until the official launch happens we won’t be able to get our hands on a fully fledged Athlon 64 X2 PC, so what we have here is a technical preview based on an AMD press kit of an Asus A8N SLI Deluxe motherboard, an Athlon 64 X2 4800+ and 1GB of Corsair 3200XL Pro memory."

"Today AMD is allowing us to share a preview of their upcoming 939-pin dual core processor that will be officially named the "AMD Athlon 64 X2" series. The official launch will be in very early June.
The CPU we have for you today carries a model number of "4800+" and is not directed at the gaming market as we are used to seeing in previews of the past."

"The personal computer industry is about to undergo a major metamorphosis, due in large part to the recent efforts of Intel and AMD. For the last few decades, mainstream desktop processor manufacturers have focused on increasing the performance of their CPUs by raising their clock speeds, augmenting the base architectures with specialized instruction sets, and by making changes to the pipeline to achieve a higher IPC (among other things). Advances have also been made in I/O technologies like AGP, PCI Express and HyperTransport, along with a plethora of other platform enhancements that have also been employed to increase overall system performance. But even with all of these changes, most modern consumer-class desktop processors have remained fundamentally similar to their ancestral counterparts, in that they've all been comprised of a single processor core. With the recent introduction of Intel's Pentium Extreme Edition 840 and Pentium-D processor, AMD's dual-core Opterons, and now the Athlon 64 X2 line of processors, personal computers can be outfitted with a single CPU that has not one, but two available processor cores."

Look at the dark side also guys. All of this AMD stuff costs a BOMB its much more expensive than the intel pentium D range and also beyond the reach of lesser mortals like me. So my dual processor dream is still two dual CPU setup may be amd 240 or something.
