Hello
My grandfather is in his early 70's and hes a lawyer. The only reason he still works is because he has made many friends at the District Court which is better than being retired and staying at home and he takes a few cases a month, whenever he feels like. Recently he told me he needed a new laptop for office use(ie storing case files, printing them out , other paper work etc.) His eyesight isnt great so I would like a Laptop with a Big Screen (14-16 inch).
Here is what Im looking for:

1) What is your budget?
20-25K

2) What size & weight consideration (if any) would you prefer?

Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen
Desktop Replacement; 17"+ screen

3) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
a. Like: Dell
b. Dislike:None

4) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?
Some Law Applications (and Basic tasks like surfing the web Skype Video Chat)

5) What screen resolution(s) & type (glossy/matte) would you prefer?
720P minimum , any.

6) Anything else you would like to say?
1. I want the keyboard to be well spaced out and as large as possible.
2. IF possible, up-gradable to Windows 8(Because that metro-like interface would be much easier to use).
3. Good build quality(Should be rugged, dont care about the looks)

Also, I was wondering should I go for a VFM laptop like an Acer/Asus or should I get a Dell with lower spec.s for the same price but better warranty and A.S. Service?

Thanks in advance!

Help please? :(

Thank you Sam and aroraanant. But I was wondering if I should go for a Windows 7 OEM home basic one? So that I can use the Microsoft Windows plan to upgrade later? Also, how much more will a OEM windows 7 home basic version cost me?
And are these spec.s good enough to run windows without slowing it down?
And what about the AMD APU laptops? How good are they? Will THEY be able to run windows 8?

And another question! :p Hows Samsung's After Sales Service?

Not sure about OEM pricing or if such a key can be bought at all.

yup. general office task will be easily handled.

They too can but you won't get any A6-A8 in this budget. Only E450 but that way you can get Windows 7 which generally these laptops doesn't have.

And another question! :p Hows Samsung's After Sales Service?

from what i heard its in line with others.

Hows HP A.S.Service? And I remember looking for a 35-40K laptop a while back and lots of people on TDF warned me against HP. Is there some problem with that brand?

HP's 2010 track record is really bad with many products failing but no such reports of laptop overheating or dead in 2011-12 so i guess they worked on their ventilation and are using better motherboard. Its safe to buy buy HP and do check for extra warranty. You may get such a deal of 1-2yr extra warranty for less than 2k.

Hello! Im a little confused actually. Will Windows 8 really be worth the upgrade on a non touch budget laptop like the HP 2105TU? Cuz I can get a (Genuine) Windows 7 Home Basic disc separately for a very low price. But then I wont get the cheap Win8 update cuz its only for laptops with OEM Windows 7.
So my question is, should I go for a lower config. with Windows 7 pre-installed so that I can get the $15 upgrade or is Windows 8 really not really worth paying extra for a OEM laptop + the upgrade charges, that too on a non touch display and lower config.

I know it hasnt released yet, but the consumer and release preview have. The main reason I thought of upgrading to Win8 was because the metro UI would be easier to learn for my grand dad. But if I get a Win 7 now and upgrade later, he would have to learn to use diff. UIs and he isnt that tech savvy really.

Well because dad is buying it from a local dealer, the same guy he buys all his computers/Computer-components for his office. So this guy gets us most laptops for cheap. The one I linked, Im getting it for 22K WITH a Bag. Ill even get a discounted Win 7 Home Basic (Original) from him! I asked him about the ones you suggested, he said the only entry level HP(Other than this Compaq one) ones he had were the 630(Out of my budget) and the mini 110 . He COULD get the HP 2105TU or the G6 but because he'll only buy one piece from his wholesaler he wouldnt be able to give a good discount!
So anyways, any comments about this laptop?
