bad sectors can be formed due to various reasons such as improper shut downs , high temps , frequent power cuts (if you dont have a ups) , improper placement , mishandling , etc.

a hard disk is a very sensitive component and should be given the maximum care and attention possible.

Bad sectors can be located and removed using the built-in chkdsk utility.

If you c drive is suspected, then go to command prompt and type:
Code:
chkdsk c: /R /F

If the drive is locked, then you will be asked if chkdsk can run after a restart. Say "yes", in that case.

WinXP has chkdsk. Win98 has scan disk. And disk defragmenter has nothing to do here.

If u are talking about the
Drive-->Right-click-->Properties-->Tools-->Check Now
utility, that is the same as the chkdsk command at dos prompt.
