apt-get update resume

I installed knoppix 3.6 using knx2hd command and I have a debian system running. I have a dial-up and have very bad connections.
Is it possible to pause my apt-get update and resume it later. I have searched for this in google but not found a suitable answer.
Any one knows how to pause/resume my updates??
