Umm... does any quarter ever go by when they don't do spectacularly well and where they don't sell more Macs than the same quarter a year ago? :D

John Gruber:
It’s all amazingly good news, but the stat of the day has to be that Apple sold 400,000 more Macs in the quarter than in any previous quarter ever — in the quarter immediately preceding a major new Mac OS X release, the sort of thing many people wait for before buying a new machine.
Exactly. How cool is that! 8)

Imagine what the next quarter will be like, with the iPhone available for four hundred dollars and unlocked in France, all Macs sporting Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard, all the iPods refreshed, iPod touch with multi-touch, iPod classic with 160GB and iPod nano with video. And all this just in time for the Christmas holiday shopping season.

Whoa! I have a feeling this Christmas is going to be Apple's best Christmas ever.

(And there's always the possibility that they might announce something even more amazing just in time for Christmas even now.) :D

Apple reports a Mac sales record

Earlier today I flagged Steve Jobs' optimism regarding Apple's current fortunes. Very well-justified optimism, it turns out: After the market closed today Apple posted its financial results for the fiscal fourth quarter, and among the many happy numbers -- profits of $904 million, up 67 percent from the same time last year -- was this amazing one: 2.2 million. That's the quantity of Macs Apple sold during the quarter, beating its previous record quarter by 400,000.

About 800,000 of the machines were desktops, and about 1.4 million were laptops. The number cements Apple's status as a computer-sales powerhouse. Though it still trails Dell (5 million sold in the quarter) and H.P. (4.3 million), Apple's sales are growing far faster than those of the Windows PC market. Read more...
