Intel has produced a winner with its core 2 duo design and for the first time as far as i am concerned, it has something to strike the AMD thunder.It is a performace champion.intel has finally come up over its long term rival ,my AMD.but hang on the rope, AMD is about to kick this one also out of the list.Don't count the AMD out for the short term perfomance of the intel core 2
AMD plans retailate with the aggresive price cuts; and later this year, it will launch 4*4, an enthuasiast platform that enables systems to use pair of high ends dual core chips. though applications and games capable of taking full advantage of multiple cores are rare as yet, we are sure to expect the peak performance, and price.
Looking further into the AMD future, AMD will open up its hypertransport bus, allowing other companies to design specialized coprocessors and accelerators and drop them onto the same superfast bus that AMD uses to shuttle data between the CPU, RAM and other key components in system.Such coprocessors could be built into a CPU package for multisocket systems or designed for the new slot type dubbed HTX
This initative, which my favorite AMD names Torrenza, will debut on the server side, where as multisocket systems are already common and where specialsed processors could accelerate java code or dtatbase operations. desktop and gaming applications are further away, but if demand is high enough, torrezna-based physics or graphics coprocessors could appear in the next few years.AMd's true answer to intel's duo 2 will arrive in 2007, when it is schedule to launch its next generation CPU archietecture called "K8L".K8l and single chip quad core processors will be compatibile with 4*4 boards according to AMD.

I have also heard that AMD will soon come up with Reverse HT for it's dual core processorrs. Reverse HT will make OS to feel that a single core is on the processor and will cause huge speed gains in single threaded applications. And for implementing it only a BIOS upgrade will be needed.
