One hundred thirty check-in counters, 74 aerobridges, automated passenger movers, restaurants, shopping joints and a high speed train connection to the city. Sounds very much like Changi or the Heathrow right? Hold it. This will be the scene at the Delhi Airport.

All this will very much be a reality at Delhi Airport soon. Delhi International Airport Pvt Ltd (DIAL), recently unveiled its Master Plan to modernise the Indira Gandhi International Airport at Delhi. DIAL’s Master Plan envisages the construction of a new integrated passenger terminal (Terminal 3) to cater to both domestic and international traffic. This terminal will be ready before the Commonwealth Games in 2010. In its first phase, the airport would be capable of handling 37 million passengers per annum (mppa). The total project outlay for this phase will be close to Rs 6700 crore.

The project will aim to:

Deliver a visionary terminal building and piers by March 31, 2010 for the Commonwealth Games.
Provide a gateway to modern India and to endow world class facility to passengers travelling through Delhi.
Accord an international standard of retail and passenger services within the terminal.
Create a design that is capable of delivery on time, on cost whilst embracing local construction techniques and materials.

Its good considering the current rush but we are going to run out of it pretty soon. A new airport with at least 3 runways is the solution then.
