A Networking qs.

Well i think it is the sutable section for this qs.
Yesterday i gave an interview and my field
is Computer networking, But there is a qs which
evoked my quest , Hope someone pecify it.

Actualy interviewer asked how can we do this >>
Scenario 1 lan of 50 nodes 30 to students and 20 to Staff had connected with ONE server and all are getting Internet through that single server.
Now how can they accoplish if they want to block internet for a particular time over Student network but allowing staff network at the same time..???



I replied that easiest method would be Subnetting.
Devide them in two diff. subnets and then creat rules acc. to subnet.

To me it is ok , I knew it can also be accomplished by VLAN but i want to disscuss it
more, like is my ans. is easiest one or there could be some other way too??

i think vlan wud be a better way cuz its a lot safer.u can configure it in sich a way that staffs can communicate with the students computers but the students cant communicate with the staffs computers.
whereas a in a subnet if some1 with enuf knowledge uses a sniffer then he can detect the presence of the other subnet and then do the needful to access net.
