MY SONG COLLECTION SIZES ALMOST 7 GB.
MY DOCUMENTS COVERS ABOUT 2GB.
C DRIVE SHOWS 28GB TOTAL AND 10.22 GB FREE. WHERE HAS THE REMAINING SPACE GONE ? AM I ATTACKED BY A VIRUS, SPYWARE, MALWARE ETC?

no it may not be the case

it must be the "program files" and "windows" folder, they usually take up to 3 to 4 gb of data

if you have xp then there is the system volume information(or system restore) folder
the there will be the virtual memory (any thing from 300 mb to whatever you have set it to)
then there will be hibernation information (again 300 to 800 mb)

so dont wory too uch, just chek these things and report if you still fing space missing also run the disk cleanup utlity of windows

use partition manager and it will tell u where the space is gone
its user friendly .... try it

Partition Manager? Anyways, use a disk space reporting tool like DiskTective. You can download the freeware here:

This is the best software to tell how the space on Hdd is used up.

btw, the technique is called TreeMaps.

My be i will try to make my project in to release version as i get some time

well, i have used partition manager and it shows how much space is occupied by which drives and even deleted partitions....

you are absolutely correct but the problem here is that of space missisng on a drive and not on a disk, i hope u get the point

In windows by default there are various causes for the system reserving
disk space for itself unless you configure them manually.
Some are..
System Restore
Swap file
Hibernation support
etc.
You can limit the space used by system restore for saving files and
information.
You can move your swap file to some other partition also allot a
fixed space for swapping.
How?
Search the forum n y ll get all the answers.

What do you mean it doesnt show the exact space taken? Of course it does. The one on the right in the 3D pie chart shows the percentage. The one on the left of the folder name on the left side pane shows the exact size of the folder.

For example, if the folder DVDR is displayed as
(004 513 751 040) ........ DVDR

then the numbers in the parantheses represent the actual size of the folder in bytes, which translates to 4.2GB of data. Of course, it shows you the exact size of the folders and the files. Of what use is the program if it doesn't?

Some space is also lost while making the partitions. Try making less number of partitions when you format your HDD next time around.

u did add them while calculating ...didnt u ???

System Restore With default settings, it may take upto 10% of ur drive space.
Swap File with default settings, will take 1.5 times of your total RAM.
Hibernation Support will make a pagefile in ur system drive as big as ur RAM.

With SequoiaView u should get diagram like this tell what files u taking how much space. Each rectangle is a file on disk. Just hover ur mouse over rectangle to see the filename in tooltip. Other info about file is displayed at status bar.
make sure to select Show hidden and system files in options to view all files.
