3d desktop support for linux???

hi ppl...
i've nvidia geforce 8600m gt graphics card....
am using mandriva 2008.. when try to activate 3d desk top it says tat my card doesnt support 3d....actually my card supports 3d and it works well in vista.... wats the sloution to this...i am open source enthu...if i cud get the compiz to work it wud be so nice for me to promote it showin tat... plz help me to solve this...
my sys config
intel core2duo 2.2ghz
nvidia geforce 8600m gt graphics card 256 mb memory
2gb ram
havin opensuse 10.3, mandriva 2008, vista

I have Mandriva 2008 too. Out of box it doesnt support 3D. Go install Drivers from nVidia [WIll be a pain] and hf.

Plz guys im not hijacking the thread but HOW DO I DO the same in openSUSE 10.3 ??

i have FX 5200... i don't know how to make 3d desktop get to work.. :(

Hey bikdel, just go here *en.opensuse.org/NVIDIA
and click on the green one click install button, key in your root password when asked for, that's all !
Its a fully automated install.
After the install, reboot your system.

Then download and install x11-video-nvidiaG01 and nvidia-gfxG01-kmp-default from the SuSE NVidia repository on another pc and install.
