I think Event Viewer is very much helpful in such setup. i have no idea about third party software.would like to know if somebody comes up wid something better.

Personal Web server is reduced version of microsoft's IIS webserver. PWS was supported on win 95 and 98. PWS was used in intranet small or large, as PWS does not support FTP. Its best to use IIS if you are using XP. and its very easily configurable.

why don't u just format ur laptop and make new partitions manually instead of using COMPAQ recovery CD. Install Linux into seprate partition after windows and use GRUB or LILO as boot loader.
P.S. i have nvr used laptop but i don't think there is any basic diffrence other than size and...
