I used Spinwrite ver 1 for low level non destructive formatting in the old days when the hard disks were 40mb (mb not gb) and even running on a 40mb drive Spinwrite used to take about 5 hours. I wonder if it is any better now ?

BOOTVIS has a strange quirk - if it completes the optimizing process in XP in less than about a minute or so then it does not make any major difference to the boot process - but at times for no apparent reason BOOTVIS will take upto 20 minutes for this same optimizing process and after this...
The MS Freeware Bootvis has an option to speed up boot process and it also has an option to show in a graph form the programs/drivers/dlls loading during the boot process and the time taken for each.
Keeping in mind problems as what you find yourself in I had setup my system accordingly.

If you format the C drive will the Boot.ini file not get deleted - is not the boot.ini file located in C root ? Can you get XP to start from D if the Boot.ini file gets deleted when formatting the C drive ?

I got my first ASUS MoBo many years back - it was a P1 board with no cache and cost me 16,000/-. I sold this board to a friend and he is still running it with no problems with a P1 150. In between I tried Soltek and had problems with 3 boards and now I am back with ASUS.
