The highly anticipated final trailer for Avengers: Infinity War has arrived. If the first trailer for Avengers: Infinity War got your heart racing, the second trailer will probably make it go faster. Almost no footage from the previous one has been repeated. Hence, you should definitely read our breakdown of the first trailer. We got to see a lot of new details, especially Thanos’ ambition to bring balance to the universe. Naturally, we have several observations to discuss. Do note, there are spoilers from the previous movies and certain predictions in this breakdown can spoil the movie for you.
Gamora starts off the trailer with narrating how Thanos always had one goal to wipe out half of the universe. They could be talking to the Guardians of the Galaxy, Mantis and Thor after they rescue Thor, although it is cut as if Gamora is talking to Iron Man. Gamora is on the spaceship, while Stark is on Earth talking to Strange. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kevin Feige says that this motivation for destruction arose after his homeworld Titan was destroyed. He added, “He vowed not to let that happen again. He thinks he sees the universe going down the tubes. He thinks he sees life expanding outward unchecked. That will bring ruin, he believes, to the universe and to that life”.
A shot of Black Widow, Bruce Banner and War Machine comes in probably looking at the Outriders arriving at Wakanda. The frame changes to Doctor Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum with a spacecraft crashing into New York. This is probably the ship that appears above the city. Tony Stark asks for “his” name. Strange learned all about the Infinity stones in the special two-issue Infinity War Prelude comics. That’s how he probably knows about Thanos and shares it all with Tony. In the next shot, Thanos removes his helmet and he has the Power stone attached to the Infinity Gauntlet. This scene’s background seems to happen when Thanos reaches Thor and Loki for the Tesseract holding the Space stone, stolen by Loki at the end of Thor: Ragnarok.
Next, Peter Parker wears the mask of his first suit and swings off towards the ship. Iron Man appears to be flying towards the ship in his upgraded suit, probably to save Spider-man considering he can track him using the suit. We know that Tony has a new suit for Iron Man after it was revealed by EW. Called the Bleeding Edge armour, it can change shape according to his needs. This can be seen in the trailer where both his legs turn into a rocket thruster to boost his speed.
Doctor Strange opens the Eye of Agamotto to reveal the Time stone to Bruce Banner and probably Tony Stark as well. We are sure Banner is there in this scene because of the hole left behind in the staircase after Banner crashes as seen in the first trailer. Captain America, Black Widow, Banner, Col. Rhodes, Sam Wilson, Vision and Scarlet Witch arrive at Wakanda, greeted by T’Challa. Winter Soldier isn’t present here which means he was already there to be treated by Shuri, seen at the end-credit scene of Black Panther. Vision is being brought to Wakanda, the most heavily-guarded place on Earth, to protect the Mind Stone from Thanos. Shuri is then seen holding a holograph of Vision.
The Guardians of the Galaxy land on a dark and mysterious place and we think they are headed to the Collector’s Museum. A leaked clip had shown the destroyed Museum followed by the Collector being tortured by Thanos for the Reality stone. Unfortunately, we do not get a glimpse of the Collector himself. After learning about Thanos himself setting out to get the Infinity Stones, the team probably wants to get to the Reality stone first. Since Thor isn’t tagging along with them, we guess this is going to happen before they meet Thor.
Starlord and Iron Man have a humorous exchange on the orange planet, preparing to fight Thanos. This is the same orange planet that was shown in the first trailer. Spider-man and Drax are also present in this scene. We aren’t sure whether this is Titan or Xandar. What we do know is Nova Corp fighter ships have crashed all over and Thanos possesses the Power stone. Last we saw the Power stone was at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy where Nova Corps takes on the responsibility of its protection. We believe after Thanos successfully breaks in and grabs the Power stone, he destroys the planet. Even though Xandar originally looks blue-green in Guardians of the Galaxy, it might acquire the orange colour after the destruction caused by Thanos. When the Collector explained about the Infinity stones to the team, he showed how a Celestial destroyed a planet with the Power stone. And this is where they showed that it is possible for the planet’s colour to change after destruction.
In the next scene, the Wakandans are heading for an attack towards the Outriders with the rest of the Avengers. Looking at the stance, we can again confirm that Hulk will wear the Hulkbuster armour (quite ironic). Although there were indications in both the trailers (the suit jumps and moves like the Hulk, not like it was piloted by Iron Man), it was finally confirmed after a toy reveal. Thor finally appears along with Rocket Raccoon and Baby Groot and throwing his fist in the air with bolts of lighting around him.
Although the trailer doesn’t show anything, we are sure that this is where he holds his new weapon Stormbreaker. Marvel is known to edit out critical plot points from trailers such as Thor’s eyepatch from Thor: Ragnarok. We think the same has been done here. Thor’s new weapon Stormbreaker was revealed through another toy. It is also rumoured that the handle will come from a branch from Baby Groot. This clip probably happens after the scene from the first trailer where Thor is seen using a huge machine.
A ship crash lands on Titan with destroyed Nova Corps fighter ships seen in the background. We think this is the same ship that comes over New York City. This is probably how Iron Man and Spider-man end up on Titan/ Xandar.
Thanos is seen walking towards Gamora while her people are being held by his guards. He takes her hand and walks away. This is a flashback to the time when Thanos adopts Gamora.
Thor is being tortured by Thanos while Loki is held down by the Black Order. They are surrounded by dead bodies which are probably Asgardians. Hence, this scene happens right where Thor: Ragnarok’s end-credit scene ended. We now know that Loki hasn’t fallen to the other side of the battle since he hands over the Tesseract to Thanos to save his brother. Thanos breaks the Tesseract and then goes on to attach the Space stone to the Gauntlet. During these scenes, Thanos says, “The end is near. When I’m done, half of humanity will still exist”.
Wakandans and the Avengers head to battle out the Outriders after the aliens destroy their shield. Starlord is seen fighting Thanos with the help of Doctor Strange on the orange planet. This means Doctor Strange also hitches a ride with Iron Man and Spider-man in the ship. One of the Black Order members, Ebony Maw is seen torturing Doctor Strange. We think Maw figured out that Strange is powerless without his Sling Ring and somehow manages to overpower him. There are some scenes with the Outriders as they pummel down Hulk in the armour.
Thanos stands tall on the destroyed planet and says, “I hope they remember you”, followed by Tony in a broken armour. We think this is going to be that scene where Iron Man dies. At last year’s Comic-Con Experience in Brazil, Kevin Feige said that “We’ve been teasing him [Thanos] for years and the trick is when you tease something for that long you have to deliver. So, within the first five minutes of Infinity War people will understand why Thanos is the biggest and baddest villain in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe”. We are guessing that the movie is going to open with the ship in NYC followed by the orange-planet. Robert Downey Jr. told News Corp Australia Network that he wants to “hang up my jersey before it’s embarrassing”. This indicates his departure from the Marvel Cinematic Universe that started off with Iron Man in 2008. We are hoping to witness a proper send-off to Iron Man which could happen with his sacrifice to save Spider-man. A lot of hearts are definitely going to break. If no one else, at least Peter Parker is going to have a hard time adjusting to a life without a father-figure like Tony Stark.
The scene then cuts to Wakanda where Captain America is facing off Thanos in hand-to-hand combat. We see the Power and Space stone on his Gauntlet. This means that Thanos will be heading off to Wakanda after leaving the orange planet and his encounter with Thor and Loki. In the same scene, Captain is able to hold off Thanos briefly which is incredible since Thanos is wearing the Gauntlet with both the stones. Did Thanos underestimate the Cap’s strength?
The final clip in the trailer shows Spider-man and Strange meeting for the first time in an enclosed area. We think this is inside the same ship from NYC. It’s still unclear when does Parker wear the Iron Spider suit since he’s seen chasing the ship in his regular suit.
Hawkeye was yet again ignored but apparently, he has a ‘special’ role in the movie. Avengers: Infinity War hits the theatres on April 27.
