Marvel had showcased a short clip of the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War movie back at the D23 Expo and San Diego Comic-Con four months ago. The footage didn’t make it online and fans were getting restless looking at the leaked poor quality clips that had leaked. It was just yesterday that Marvel uploaded a trailer to celebrate the decade of success the MCU has achieved right since the first Iron Man movie in 2008. And at the end, they announced that a trailer is coming the next day. We finally have the trailer and there’s a lot of things we want to discuss.
We are moving into spoiler and speculation territory henceforth. If you haven’t watched the previous movies (until Thor: Ragnarok), then we would recommend you to skip the remaining part of this story and simply enjoy the above trailer. This discussion also moves into the fan theory realm where we will be speculating and trying to connect the scenes to the previous movies. Let’s go over some of the important scenes we saw in the trailer.
The trailer starts off with Nick Fury, Iron Man, Vision, Thor, and Black Widow speaking in the background about the purpose of the Avengers.
Doctor Strange and Wong find Bruce Banner covered in rubble at Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum, which is probably after Banner crash-landed on Earth. Thor: Ragnarok’s post-credit scene showed Thor and Banner on their way to Earth where they suddenly come across a huge spacecraft (Thanos’ ship?). Their ship probably gets wrecked in battle and Banner ends up on Earth.
The trailer moves to Peter Parker travelling on a bus and suddenly he gets goosebumps on his arm, an indicator that he has finally acquired his “spider sense”. His spider sense is activated because of a portal opening up above New York City. The same portal is also probably seen by Doctor Strange, Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, and Wong.
Loki is seen walking past dead bodies with the Tesseract, as he hands it over to someone and it has to be Thanos. Looks like Thor’s little brother is going to stay true to his nature after all we saw in Ragnarok. From the same movie, Thor asks Loki to awaken Surtur using the Eternal Flame kept in Odin’s Vault. As he enters the vault, Loki stops for a while and stares at the Tesseract. Considering how much he has wanted the artifact (containing the Space Stone) in all the movies, it’s clear that he nicked it away before Asgard burned down.
Meanwhile, the portal is activated and Thanos comes out of it. Peter Parker finally dons the Iron Spider suit offered by Stark that he rejects initially at the end of Spiderman: Homecoming. So, it’s clear that Spidey is officially an Avenger now.
Thor is seen holding and resisting, what looks like, the other side of the portal and he still has an eye-patch. This scene probably happens after the big spacecraft appears at the end of Ragnarok.
Captain America is seen grabbing a spear thrown by a Proxima Midnight (one of the Children of Thanos and the group called Black Order). In the following scene, T’Challa says, “Get this man a shield”, which means the Cap is getting a new shield cast from Wakandan Vibranium. If you’ve watched Civil War, you might recall that Captain dropped his shield after his fight with Iron Man. Captain America and Black Panther are seen fighting a horde of aliens (called the Outriders) with Wakandan warriors in a jungle. Also, Steven Rogers has a new suit with some Wakandan touches but we don’t get to see any shield. We’ll get more perspective on these things after the Black Panther movie is out on February 16, 2018. Later in the trailer, War Machine, Falcon, Winter Soldier, Falcon, Black Widow and Hulk join them in fighting against the alien army.
Stark brings back the Hulkbuster armour. Vision is seen held down on the ground by Corvus Glaive (another member of the Black Order), as the Mind Stone on his forehead is attacked, probably in an attempt to be removed.
It’s followed by the money shot of the trailer where Thanos inserts the Space stone on the Infinity Gauntlet he’s wearing and he gives an evil smirk. The Power Stone is also seen on the powerful glove indicating that he was successful in acquiring it. At the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1, the Orb containing the Power Stone was given to the Nova Corps and placed under protection at Xandar.
The final scene shows Thor completely confused as he meets the Guardians including Mantis. This happens probably after the mysterious ship appears at the end of Ragnarok, and we’ll get to know who’s commanding the ship and how everything goes haywire.
We are definitely excited for Infinity War that Marvel Studios has been building since the last decade. It’s going to be amazing to look at how all the movies will converge at one point. However, this trailer isn’t exactly the one that was shown earlier while more scenes were also leaked recently. Since the trailer leaked online, it keeps appearing every now and then. Obviously, it gets banned instantly. Looking forward, the Soul Stone is still missing and no one knows where is it. The trailer shows that Thanos doesn’t have it and since there’s only Black Panther left before Infinity War, we think we might get to see a glimpse either in the movie itself or in a post-credits scene. If rumours and fan theories are to be believed, Heimdall was the one bearing the Soul Stone all along.
