Re: Mobile buyers guide

FROM 5-10K:

Things to look for under this budget:
  • Android OS
  • 3-3.2" screen
  • HVGA resolution
  • 3.2Mp camera

Android Smartphone:
Mobile | Operating System | Display | Resolution | Camera | Processor | Ram | Internal Memory Dell XCD35 | Android 2.2 | 3.5" | 480X800 | 3.2 | Qualcomm MSM7227 600Mhz | 256Mb | 200Mb
LG Optimus NET | Android 2.3 | 3.2" | 320X480 | 3.2 | Qualcomm MSM7227T 800Mhz | 512Mb | 150Mb
LG Optimus One | Android 2.3 | 3.2" | 320X480 | 3.2 | Qualcomm MSM7227 600Mhz | 512Mb | 200Mb
Samsung Galaxy Y | Android 2.3 | 3" | 240X320 | 2 | Broadcom BCM21553 832Mhz | 290Mb | 180Mb
Samsung Galaxy Fit | Android 2.3 | 3.3" | 240X320 | 5 | Qualcomm MSM7227 600Mhz | 280Mb | 160Mb

ANDROID BUYERS NOTE: Only Qualcomm Snapdragon & TI OMAP series chipsets support flash in browser i.e. to watch video online through browser. Also these chipsets have either Adreno 205 & PowerVR SGX530 GPU which is way better than Adreno 200 GPU found in the older MSM series chipsets. Live with Walkman, Xperia Pro & Fire XT comes with front camera.

Hi Sam,

Firstly, thanks for the very helpful guide you have made! I was thinking to buy the Dell XCD 35. My budget is about 10k. As per the features, 600Mhz proccy & 512MB RAM (some guys in reviews have mentioned 512 MB of RAM, can you please confirm).
Will this be a good buy given that I am open to root the phone using cyanogenmod 7 (I know it will void the warranty!)?
I was checking out the Galaxy Y too but the screen res is too low :-|

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

XCD35 new stock have 512Mb ram according to new buyers. but if you want to game, that 600Mhz ARM v6 won't be sufficient. you need a 800Mhz-1Ghz ARM v7 for that.

Second option is the ageing Optimus One that recently got official support for Cyanogenmod but the screen size as well as resolution comes down. The combination works well but you'll loose 0.3" screen.

Last Option is HTC Explorer. processor is 600Mhz but based on ARM v7 & GPU even if same as Dell & LG is clocked higher. Get it only if you are ready to play around with custom rom.

Thanks Sam, I didn't quite like the build of the optimus one/Net. Though it is a balanced phone. Explorer RAM is less right? Using Custom ROM's should be safe I guess if I follow the guides I hope.

Finally:
XCD 35 or Explorer or Galaxy Y, or Wave Y?

Priorities: Good screen, GPS should be good, I have a PSP so don't care much about gaming.

Thanks again!

nope. Explorer got full 512Mb ram. only problem is Sense UI is so heavy & massive that very little space is left of the 512Mb rom for app installation.

Explorer: less internal space. fixed focus camera. Cortex A5 based processor (means faster in short).
XCD35: high resolution screen, 512Mb ram but processor is slow (same that is found in all entry level Androids). stuck in Android 2.2
Galaxy Y: high clocked processor & have dedicated GPU. 300Mb ram. but 3" with 240X320 screen which is ok for the screen but not recommended if you like testing apps and games.
Wave Y: ONLY if you want a non-Android smartphone. it has everything a smartphone need to have. but BADA can be a dealbreaker. i personally will never go for BADA as it has matured a lot since the original Wave mobiles but not for me.

Hi sam,
nice work but there is one mistake. you mentioned nokia asha 300 in "changelog" instead of nokia asha 200.

Hmm... Dell XCD and LG Optimus One removed.
So there's no chance to get Dell XCD now isn't it. For a friend. Doesn't look like there's a good Android option around 7-8k like Dell XCD35, now.

you may find XCD35 at Dell showroom. local shops & even online shops have stopped selling this mobile. hence removed.

Nokia Asha 300: Price in India, Reviews, Specification: Flipkart.com

i know Asha 300 is available but its a dumb phone. Symbian Series40 OS. can't even multitask  it packs a 1Ghz processor but whats the use. a 500-600Mhz processor is an overkill for it.

i "may" add a feature phone list to the 5-10k section. if i do, this will be part of that list.

Re: Mobile Reference Guide: February 2012

ok sam i also know its dumb phone as it as Symbian Series 40 OS.but those who want 5MP camera in 6835/- so its best choice.(if camera matter with tight budget) & also its has 3G connectivity.
