Google Maps dismissed as 'unreliable' by Indian government

Unlike many of us, the Indian government doesn't think much of Google's mapping services.

The country's mapping and surveying agency, Survey of India, urged citizens to stop relying on Google Maps and Google Earth, saying neither has been authenticated by the government, reported Business Standard. To encourage this, the SoI made its own maps available online for citizens to use at no cost.

"Google Maps [is] not authenticated and widely used by consumers to find restaurants and parks only," the surveyor-general of India, Swarna Subba Rao was quoted by the Economic Times as saying. He advised the service be used for casual applications that don't require high levels of accuracy, noting the government doesn't rely on it.

It's not the first time the country has found fault with Google Maps. Previously, Cambodia and India had protested over how borders are being presented on the service. Google released different versions of the service in each country to comply with regulations.

Google Maps helps more than a billion people globally to navigate the roads every day. To ensure its accuracy, users contribute by making suggested edits and adding new places.

She is correct in the sense that govt does not rely on google maps for important work like infrastructure projects that require specific precision related to certain topographical features. It is also true that google being a multinational company doesn't always take into account accurate representation of disputed border areas(like with China & Pakistan). Still this statement is not unnecessary because for common people who are looking for traffic routes & restaurants google maps is what they require, not precise topographic maps of the area.

^^There is a difference between using these satellites for civilian use & for non-civilian use. Many of the recently launched such satellites by India are meant for non-civilian use.

How about the recent launch of satellites by ISRO? Aren't we on the verge to have our own satellite like Russian owned Glonass?

Precisely to be True + Correct in the sense, that we,are heading towards an American System, like the Iron dome project or the uncherished dreams of Late President Mr. Ronald Regan...
Let's wait for the full functioning of Cartosat Series of Satellites, mainly for the Networking aspects, which might have a huge impact on our daily (networking) lives.

The point is government rules Gmaps as unreliable because they have their own satellites. Civilians did not say its unreliable. Whole of Ola and Uber runs on Gmaps APIs

He was technically correct as whatever purpose civilians use google maps for is casual compared to high precision non-civilian usages. He didn't say that people should stop using google maps for even casual applications though he did suggest to use their own maps if people want more accuracy(which though is not required anyway for such casual uses).

Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System - Wikipedia
The system is facing some issues with recent failure of 3 Rubidium atomic clocks onboard 1 satellite. These Rubidium atomic clocks are facing similar issues in Europe's Galileo system too. Most probably they will be replaced with more accurate(but costlier) Caesium atomic clocks.

According to me, He was technically correct as whatever purpose civilians use google maps for their general purpose as compared to high precision non-civilian usages. He didn't say that people should stop using google maps for even general use applications though he did suggest to use their own maps if people want more accuracy. Which doesn't make any sense of asking the question more?
