A true 480Hz display?

PC displays are continuing to get faster and faster, delivering faster response times, clearer motion and push gaming hardware forward.

Now reports of a 480Hz prototype display are circulating online, a display so fast that most games have no hope of reaching it, either hitting limitation on today's hardware or coming with built-in frame rate caps that are lower than this display's refresh rate.

This display is said to come with a resolution that is lower than 1080p, though we have been unable to find any official verification of this display's full specifications at this time.

A display that offers a refresh rate this high offers some interesting perspective on the limitations of the certain hardware, with Blurbuster stating that the polling rate of modern mice could become a limiting factor when used with a display that is this fast.

Doubling the refresh rate halves the distance between image-copies in the stroboscopic effect. This also applies to things like FPS games (e.g. flick-turns while staring at crosshairs — and then seeing the “stepping effect” of the turn).

In fact, even the 1000Hz report-rate of a gaming mouse is becoming a limiting factor — mouse manufacturers such as Razer, Logitech, SteelSeries, ASUS ROG, Zowie, and others, now need to release true-2000 Hz position report rates.

To be clear, we do not expect production-ready 480Hz displays to hit the market anytime soon, though it does showcase exactly how fast display technology is moving forward.
