(Noob Alert)Want to connect a 5.1 System with My Sony Bravia TV to play PS3 games...How do I start?

Hello

I have recently bought a PS3 and a 32 Inch Sony Bravia TV.
Currently I am using a 2.1 speaker with TV (Creative , Meant for PC ), by connecting it to the Headphone jack.

I was planning to buy a 5.1 and I thought it would be as simple as it was to connect 2.1 . But I read that usually TV will not have the power to provide surround sound by itself, so some adapters will be needed.

Now I am lost. From what I understand, that standard 5.1 PC speakers won't work with he TV.

Should I then buy a Home theater System? Will that solve the issue? (I dont want that DVD thing they give, just Speakers).

Or is there any way to connect them to PS3 directly, or will I be needing some kinda amplifiers?

What is the best way to setup a surround sound system in this scenario.

Thanks for the help in advance. :)

For proper 5.1 surround, you'd need a Home Theter system. Plus, the amplifier should have good amount of inputs and outputs.

The HT amplifier should also have HDMI Input and Output. HDMI cable from the PS3 goes into the amplifier, and then a HDMI cable from the amplifier goes into the TV.

Audio cables (depending on what your TV has) out from the TV go into the amplifier as well.

Speakers will be connected to the amplifier.

If you want you can use digital out from the PS3 instead of HDMI.

Check out these threads by S_V and Sarath. They have written good stuff.

-----------------

Regular 5.1 PC speakers have three 3.5 mm "analog" cables. You will not able to connect those to your TV.

If your PC 5.1 speakers have "digital" coaxial connection, then you will be able to connect those to the TV. Connnect PS3 to your TV via HDMI. And then connect your 5.1 PC speakers to the TV via coaxial.

But again, we need proper details of the TV you have, what connections it has at the back. Your query is halfhearted.

Thanks ico for the reply. :)

I have one more doubt. I have connected my PS3 to TV using HDMI.
Now my TV supports audio out in red/white kinda socket :

I saw a 5.1 speaker which supports the input in that form. Now if i Buy a cable and connect my TV to that speaker, will I be able to get 5.1 surround sound? :)

All you need is a decent Home Theater with amplifier like the one I posted above. btw, that's Stereo Out and it isn't for 5.1 channel.

This amplifiers has an Stereo IN (Red/White), Digital IN (Optical and Coax) and HDMI IN. HDMI OUT.

@eggman: I am actually actively pursuing the same problem myself but that is for my article. During my research I found many possibilities but I will not put everything down here.

However at the end of it I would say get the Onkyo HTS-3400. It's no coincidence that Ico and me suggested that to your and S_V currently owns it and is the author of the post linked above.

Its is an amplifier + speaker setup. You connect the PS3 HDMI to the Amplifier (In) and a HDMI coming from your Amplifier (out) to your HDTV (In)

PS3 > Amplifier > HDTV

If you indeed get an amplifier as pictured above, you can also connect your DVD player, any other media player, your STB etc to it. No need to connect everything directly to PC. This way you also get 5.1 sound from the other sources like DVD player too considering they support it.

As of now I have no idea how an analog 5.1 works or if it even exists I am aware of surround sound only by HDMI and Optical Coax cable. HDMI is superior though.

This is the easiest and most frill free way of getting surround sound. Price: 30k

Thanks ico for the reply. :)

I saw a 5.1 speaker which supports the input in that form. Now if i Buy a cable and connect my TV to that speaker, will I be able to get 5.1 surround sound? :)

You will be getting 2.1 through 5 speakers. The surround effect will be non existant.
It is the same way a mono sound can be produced in a 2.1 but you wont have any speaker seperation.

In short, NO you cant get 5.1 surround sound through stereo out. But yes you will get sound from all 5 speakers (if the speaker you mentioned runs on analog RCA)

Shorter still you will get 5.1 sound but not 5.1 surround sound :)

Thanks all for the reply. I bought Logitech z906.
The second cheapest (other was Philips Home Theater system for 9k ) and probably the best on a tight budget :)
