If you are an Ubuntu fan, you will love this one. You will now be able to enjoy your favourite Linux-based operating system (OS) on your mobile handsets and tablet devices as well.

According to a ZDNet report, this free and open source operating system is all set to challenge Google's Android OS. The report is based on a revelation made by Canonical's founder Mark Shuttleworth. He revealed that the company will focus on its longer-term goal of expanding to all computing platforms, including mobile phones, tablet devices and also smart TVs. But all this will be done after the company has finalised the latest version of desktop computers.

This is great :D

I think it should create a separate segment rather then challenge Android which I dont think is very smart.

as if we did not see that coming,

and as lfc said, many things are broken in the current unity, including some issues with opera not rendering properly when used with compositing.

OS X is based on BSD, iOS is based on OS X.

Android was based on Linux kernel, but I think it got deviated from the main branch.

I did not think I would hate Unity so much. But I suppose trying to clone the Mac look got into the devs head. Gnome was so much better. Wish they don't use Unity in the mobile version.

Fix?? I wish they remove it completely!! I hate it :x
It's not that bad really, a few modifications (such as disabling autohide of the launcher, reducing its size, etc.), make it at least as useable as Gnome 2 if not better. :p

They only need to fix those usability issues, and they're done.

I wish Gnome 3 was used by Ubuntu, potentially it's an enviroment perfectly suited for tablets.

So the days for symbian, iOS and all that pricey things are numbered......

There are still good thing remain in world like free software.......

Correct me if I'm wrong but is android the most power hungry mobile OS?

Also I think this was featured in Digit mag where cell phones in the future (supposedly) will be sold blank without any OS and the user can add any OS he wants later on.

I hope this is the first step towards it :)
