Friends, I had installed Cent IS 5.5 along with xp but the problem was that the Cent os occupied the whole of my empty space on my hard disk.. Means, i have got a 320 gb hdd.. got a 50 gb partition for Xp and rest for my data..

Pls. let me know that how can i make a manual partition of say about 30 or 40 gb & install ubuntu on it.. Also, which ubuntu version works better in dual-boot with XP??

Legend Never Ends
Install Ubuntu with windows installer.

When u next restart there will automatically and option whether to boot into ubuntu or xp. If not use this- Download EasyBCD 2.0.2.117 Free - A handy tool for tweaking your system - Softpedia

and create a boot entry for Ubuntu!

a snapshot of your HDD partitions will make it easy for us to suggest the best way to install ubuntu.

I am in same dilemma. What should be installed first, Windows or Ubuntu?
I have Win7.

@desiibond: Have plenty of partitions and space.

Windows should be installed first because if installed after ubuntu then it rewrites the boot manager thus gaining access to windows only although you can make ubuntu work then also but its full of hassles.

I suggest you to make a separate drive for ubuntu and backup your important data before doing this because one wrong click can lead to data loss.

Here is what I do:

  1. Install Windows
  2. Install EASEUS Partition Master
  3. Create an NTFS partition (15GB) for Ubuntu
  4. Install Virtual Clone Drive or Daemon Tools
  5. Mount Ubuntu ISO and select "Install inside windows"
  6. Install it in the 15GB partition created in Step 3
  7. Forget about Windows unless work demands that I use it

@Krow: whoa...it looks so simple. Will definitely try. BTW this link of yours shows all the steps :p, looks like I need not worry about anything :D

Thanks gameranand

Edit:

I successfully installed Ubuntu following steps suggested by Krow.
Faced temporary glitch because of my nVidia card, but started in restricted graphics mode and fixed it. Installed Linux after a long gap of 10 years! I am loving it!

Happy to help! :) I'm glad we have another ubuntu user.

You should install compiz fusion and enable extra effects. :)

congrats. It looks much better, ain't it.

PS: Given that you have nvidia card, try gnome 3 (live cd is available on their site. looks amazing).

if you are open to alternative ideas , please take a look at How to Install Ubuntu 9.10 using VMware in Windows Vista | UnixNewbie.org

Its like running Ubuntu as an Application in Windows , its the same , only you don;t need no Dual Booting or HDD Partitions.
